Geelong's fastest-growing badminton club. World-class coaching. Proven results. Every player welcome — from first-timers to tournament champions.
EVOLVE Badminton Club was founded in 2021 to do one thing well: give Geelong's young athletes access to the kind of coaching that changes careers. What we built instead was a community.
Based in Belmont and Highton, we've grown from a small training group into a multi-program club serving 53 juniors, 20+ adults and senior members — with competition nights that draw up to 35 players every Friday.
We're proud of the 50/50 split between male and female participants — proof that when you build a genuinely welcoming environment, everyone shows up. Our programs serve complete beginners through to tournament-ready athletes, with clear pathways between every level.
The club's coaching team is extraordinary by any measure. Former Australian No. 1 and World No. 35 Darren McDonald heads a squad that includes Commonwealth Games medallists and more than 20 years of combined coaching experience.
We believe every kid in regional Australia deserves access to elite coaching and a clear pathway forward — regardless of background, ability, or starting point.
Clear, progressive pathways from first-touch beginner programs to national competition. Every step planned, coached, and supported.
Women and girls, migrants, EAL participants, ASD children, and anyone who needs additional support — all actively welcomed and supported.
Regional players can compete at the highest levels. Our results demonstrate that structured coaching produces measurable outcomes — fast.
From Geelong to World No. 35 — Darren McDonald's story proves regional athletes belong on the world stage. We tell it every session.
Full alignment with Badminton Australia and ASC safe sport frameworks. Child safety and positive coaching are non-negotiable at EVOLVE.
Sport is a bridge. Badminton builds social connections, belonging, resilience, and lifelong healthy habits across Geelong's diverse population.
First time on a court? No problem. Fundamentals, footwork, racket skills and game understanding in a low-pressure, welcoming environment.
Structured technical and tactical development for progressing players. Multiple blocks per week to accelerate skill acquisition and court intelligence.
Dedicated athletes seeking competitive development. Elite coaching and physical conditioning in an early morning format that fits school and work.
Monday evening social games for working adults. Active, competitive, fun — and a great way to meet people in a relaxed atmosphere.
Internal competition nights for beginner and intermediate players. Structured match play with up to 35 participants — the highlight of the week.
Saturday morning coaching for intermediate players, plus Sunday outdoor physical conditioning at Eastern Beach for dedicated athletes.
"From Geelong to World No. 35 — the journey starts here."

2024 Season Highlights
Our daughters — Azure, Alva and Abby — have been part of EVOLVE for more than three years. With the patient guidance of Darren, Jane, Kiara and Michelle, they have grown from beginners into confident players now competing in tournaments. The club builds confidence, resilience, discipline, and a positive mindset in every child.
Last year I lost all of my games at the Geelong tournament. It was very difficult. But with Darren's guidance, I kept training and became more confident. This year, in the same tournament, I achieved one gold medal and two silver medals. Something I never thought possible.
My boys have had a wonderful experience at EVOLVE Badminton Club. The coaches are patient, supportive, and passionate. Since joining, they have developed badminton abilities and also learned teamwork, discipline and sportsmanship. I highly recommend EVOLVE to any family looking for a welcoming badminton community.
I started learning badminton at EVOLVE when I was 7 years old. I really enjoy the training and the competition nights. The coaches are kind and patient, and I have made many friends. My badminton skills have improved a lot.
